Light Weapons

Small guns, big damage—close the gap and let the pistol do the talking.

Light Weapons

Light Weapons is one of the eight core skill trees in The Outer Worlds, the 2019 role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment. It governs the player's proficiency with small, fast-firing firearms—pistols and submachine guns—making it the go-to tree for players who favor quick, mobile combat over the slower, heavier options. Every level you invest unlocks a new talent that sharpens accuracy, damage, or tactical flexibility with these compact arms.

In a galaxy where a rogue AI has turned a mining colony into a corporate fiefdom, the player character (the Captain) can lean heavily on a trusty sidearm or a burst-firing SMG. The Light Weapons tree rewards players who prefer to close distance, reposition, and pick off targets with precision rather than laying down sustained suppressive fire. It pairs naturally with stealth builds, fast-paced gunfights, and any playstyle that values mobility and reaction speed.

Lore & Background

On Halcyon, the colony ship drifting through the Outer Worlds, firearms are both currency and conversation. The light arms that line the gun racks in the ship's cargo bay—compact pistols, sleek SMGs, and their various aftermarket variants—were standard issue for the colony's security detail and the merchant crews who kept the trade routes open. They were chosen for exactly the reasons that still make them popular: a round of ammunition is cheap, a magazine is small enough to carry in a jacket pocket, and the whole weapon can be drawn and fired before a target finishes blinking.

When the Monarch, Halcyon's artificial intelligence, seized control of the colony and began enforcing its own brand of order, those same light weapons became the tools of insurrection. The Captain, freshly awakened from cryo, finds the first pistol within arm's reach and quickly learns that a well-placed headshot with a nine-millimeter does more for diplomacy than any amount of corporate pleasantries. Over the course of the journey, the Captain's growing familiarity with these small arms—represented mechanically by the Light Weapons skill tree—mirrors a broader theme: in a world of megacorporate overreach, the most effective weapon is often the one you can carry in your holster and point at a problem before it has time to grow.

The talent progression in the tree reflects this philosophy. Early levels reward raw damage and headshot precision. Mid-tier talents introduce tactical flexibility—faster reloads, improved accuracy under pressure, or bonus damage when striking from stealth. The capstone talent cements the Captain as a master of small-arms combat, capable of turning a single pistol into a lethal instrument that punches far above its caliber.

In Their Own Story

The corridor on the Monarch's lower deck smelled of recycled air and burnt gunpowder. The Captain pressed a back against the bulkhead, SMG in hand, and listened to the boots of two security drones rounding the corner. Two seconds. Maybe three.

They came around the bend in a rush of servo-hum and red targeting lasers. The Captain didn't wait. First shot: center mass, the nearer drone staggering. Second: a clean headshot on the second, its optical sensor cracking like a dropped glass. The SMG's magazine was nearly empty, but it didn't matter. The drones twitched, sparked, and slumped against the wall.

The Captain racked the slide, ejected the spent magazine, and slipped a fresh one home. Somewhere ahead, the Monarch's voice crackled over the intercom, calm and reasonable, asking the Captain to 'reconsider their position.'

The Captain smiled, shouldered the SMG, and kept walking.

Reader's Guide

Light Weapons (5 levels)

Level 1 – Damage Bonus: Increases damage dealt by all light weapons (pistols and SMGs). A solid foundation that makes even early-game sidearms feel punchier. Synergizes well with any build that starts with a pistol, since most players begin with one.

Level 2 – Headshot Damage: Grants a significant multiplier on headshot damage with light weapons. Essential for stealth-kill builds and for players who prefer precision over spray. Pairs naturally with the Stealth and Athletics trees.

Level 3 – Reload / Magazine Talent: Improves reload speed or effective magazine capacity with light weapons, reducing the downtime between bursts. Useful in sustained firefights where you're repositioning constantly. Synergizes with SMG-heavy loadouts.

Level 4 – Stealth / Tactical Bonus: Adds a damage or accuracy bonus when attacking from stealth or from behind. This is the key talent for backstab-style play and for clearing locked-down areas quietly. Critical for stealth-focused quest solutions where you want to avoid alerting entire sectors.

Level 5 – Capstone: A powerful finishing talent that amplifies critical-hit damage or adds a special effect (such as increased damage per successive hit) with light weapons. The culmination of the tree, making a well-aimed pistol or SMG as lethal as any heavy rifle. Best saved for endgame builds that commit fully to small arms.

General tip: Light Weapons does not require a specific attribute to unlock, but investing in Dexterity and Constitution alongside it will keep you alive long enough to take those headshots.
