The Cargo Bay
A cramped metal box of crates where the whole adventure kicks off.
The Cargo Bay is a compact, industrial compartment aboard Halcyon, the starship that carries a colony of settlers toward the Outer Worlds. It is the very first space the player character experiences after waking from the long voyage, making it the narrative and mechanical starting point of the entire game. Functionally, it serves as Halcyon's primary storage area for colony supplies, equipment, and freight containers bound for the new settlement.

Lore & Background
Later in the story, the Cargo Bay remains a point of reference on Halcyon. Depending on the player's choices regarding the Monarch's authority, the ship's interior—including the bay—can shift in tone, with different factions asserting control over the vessel's corridors and storage. Yet the bay itself never changes its fundamental character: stacked containers, industrial lighting, and the quiet sense that everything in it was packed by someone who expected to need it on the other side of the star.
In Their Own Story
The hiss of the cryo-pod cycling down is the first sound. Then the smell—recycled air, a faint tang of ozone, the dusty sweetness of sealed cardboard. You push the lid of your container aside and your boots hit cold steel grating. Around you, other pods are opening, other people blinking in the harsh white strip-lighting. A woman in a sharp uniform—Monarch, you will learn—steps over a spilled crate and barks orders at a technician who is still fumbling with a clipboard. "Everyone up. Shuttle in twenty. Move." You stand in the narrow aisle between two towering freight containers, your hand still on the lid, and for a long moment you just listen to the ship groan around you, the deep subsonic thrum of the drive, the distant clank of something settling in the hull. Then you pick up the pistol sitting on the crate beside your pod, and the world begins.
Reader's Guide
The Cargo Bay is a small, enclosed interior on Halcyon. The visual identity is strictly industrial: riveted metal bulkheads, overhead pipe runs, fluorescent strip lighting with a slight greenish cast, and rows of stacked cargo containers in muted rust, olive, and grey tones. The floor is steel grating. There is no natural light and no open sky—every surface is man-made and functional.
Major points of interest include the player's starting cryo-pod and adjacent container (where initial equipment and a starting weapon are found), several lootable supply crates along the main aisle, and a small workstation or terminal near the far wall where a technician can be found. The space is tight enough that combat encounters, if any, feel claustrophobic and close-quarters.
The area is controlled by the player and the Monarch's faction at the start of the game. There are no hostile enemies in the bay itself during the opening sequence, but the cramped layout means there is very little room to reposition. The primary traversal quirk is simply the narrow aisles between containers, which limit line-of-sight and make the space feel like a corridor rather than a room. Environmental hazards are minimal—mainly the general ship-ambient hum and the occasional sparking conduit that adds atmosphere without mechanical threat.
Did You Know?
- The Cargo Bay is the player's first fully interactive space in the game, and every subsequent open world is a deliberate contrast to its claustrophobia.
- The starting weapon and initial gear the player picks up are found in or beside the cryo-pod container within the bay.
- The Monarch's first major directive to the group—head to the shuttle and depart—is issued directly in the Cargo Bay, making it the de facto 'briefing room' of the opening act.
- The bay's design philosophy mirrors the game's broader theme: the Monarch's colony project is all about pre-packed solutions and rigid logistics, and the Cargo Bay is the physical embodiment of that philosophy.
