Firefly
A scrappy, sharp-tongued rebel who'd rather torch a Constellation depot than file a polite complaint.
Firefly is one of the four primary companion characters in Obsidian Entertainment's 2019 RPG *The Outer Worlds*. A young, fiercely idealistic resistance fighter aboard the interstellar freighter Halcyon, she represents the scrappy, anti-corporate spirit of the Firefly uprising against the Constellation's authoritarian rule. Players can recruit her as a traveling companion, and her presence shapes several key story decisions on the planet Edgewater and beyond.
She is widely beloved by the fanbase for her sharp wit, her willingness to talk back to the player, and the way she embodies the game's central theme: ordinary people pushing back against a system that treats them as disposable products.

Lore & Background
Firefly is a young woman who has spent her waking life aboard Halcyon, the colony ship that carries the first settlers to the Outer Worlds. While the Constellation's corporate executives sleep in their cryo-pods, the rest of the crew goes about their routines in a cramped, utilitarian station. Firefly belongs to a loose cell of dissidents—dubbed the Firefly resistance—who believe the Constellation's plan to colonize the Outer Worlds is nothing more than a new form of corporate plantation, with the settlers as indentured labor for a boardroom they will never see.
Her personality is defined by a mix of genuine idealism and a reckless, almost glib bravado. She speaks in quick, cutting one-liners, challenges the player's decisions with pointed sarcasm, and treats the Constellation's branding and marketing speak as the absurd corporate nonsense it is. Despite her youth, she carries a quiet weight: she has seen what happens when people accept a comfortable cage, and she is determined to break it, even if the breaking is messy and dangerous.
In the broader mythology of the Outer Worlds, Firefly personifies the 'little guy' narrative that the game's satirical sci-fi setting is built around. The Constellation sells the Outer Worlds as a promised land of fresh starts, but the fine print reveals a system of debt, surveillance, and control. Firefly is the voice that reads the fine print out loud and then flips the table.
In Their Own Story
The air in the Halcyon mess hall tasted of recycled coffee and burnt protein paste. Firefly leaned against the bulkhead, boots crossed, a stolen Constellation energy cell rolling between her fingers like a coin. The hum of the station's life-support thrummed through the metal floor, a lullaby no one on this ship had ever asked for.
"You know what the worst part is?" she said, not looking up. "They put a little smiley-face icon on the cryo-pod interface. Like you're boarding a very expensive, very one-way bus. 'Enjoy your ride!'" She made air-quotes with both hands, then caught the cell before it hit the deck. "I'm not enjoying my ride. I'm *on* the ride. And I'm about to open the doors."
Somewhere down the corridor, a Constellation security drone whirred past, its blue eye sweeping the corridor in slow, patient arcs. Firefly let the cell drop into her pocket and straightened her jacket. The mess hall was empty now, just the two of them and the faint glow of the starfield beyond the porthole—distant, indifferent, and very, very far from any boardroom.
Reader's Guide
Firefly is one of the four main companions in The Outer Worlds. You first encounter her aboard Halcyon during the opening sequence, where she is already active as a member of the resistance cell working against the Constellation's plans for the colony. After the initial events on the station, she becomes available as a recruitable companion for the remainder of the game.
Personality-wise, Firefly is quick-tongued, irreverent, and deeply principled. She will challenge your choices with sarcastic one-liners, especially if you lean toward cooperating with the Constellation. She is not a passive follower; she has opinions, she voices them, and she will push back if your decisions conflict with her anti-corporate values. She is also the companion most likely to make you laugh with a deadpan quip in the middle of a tense moment.
In terms of gameplay, recruiting Firefly locks out one of the other three companion slots (Javi, Nicholai, or Monarch), so choose based on the playstyle and dialogue flavor you prefer. She does not grant a unique combat buff tied to her name, but her presence unlocks resistance-specific dialogue options and can influence outcomes in Edgewater's faction conflict. If you side strongly with the Constellation, expect her to be visibly (and vocally) unhappy, and in some story branches her fate can be affected by your choices.
Tip: Talk to her often. Her idle banter and commentary on the Constellation's absurd corporate jargon are some of the best writing in the game, and they sell the satire far better than any exposition dump could.
Did You Know?
- Firefly's resistance cell is named after the common name for the Halcyon station's crew, reinforcing the game's theme that the 'settlers' are just another product line to the Constellation.
- She is one of only four companions you can travel with at a time, meaning recruiting her means forgoing Javi, Nicholai, or Monarch for the rest of the playthrough.
- Her dialogue is written to directly satirize 1980s corporate-speak and 1990s video-game marketing language, making her a walking critique of the very medium the game is made in.
- Firefly's resistance activities on Halcyon set up the central conflict on Edgewater, where the player must decide whether the colony's 'fresh start' is genuine or just another layer of corporate control.
