The Scout

She marks the trail so the rest of you don't have to guess where the danger is.

The Scout

The Scout is one of the core companion characters in Obsidian Entertainment's 2019 role-playing game The Outer Worlds. A young, wide-eyed reconnaissance specialist who serves aboard the Monarch at the game's opening, she becomes a recruitable member of the Captain's crew and represents the frontier-explorer spirit that defines life in the Halo colony system.

She is one of the handful of loyal companions the player can bring along on missions across the Halo, offering her scouting instincts, a sharp crossbow, and an almost stubbornly optimistic outlook on a world that is, by any honest measure, deeply broken.

Lore & Background

The Scout arrived on the Monarch as part of the Monarch's working crew, a small band of specialists assembled to carry out the Monarch's mission in the Halo. Unlike the more hardened or jaded members of that crew, she carries herself with the energy of someone who still believes the frontier has something worth finding. Her scouting work—reading terrain, spotting ambushes, mapping routes through unfamiliar settlements—makes her indispensable in a region where the Halcyon Corporation's control is total but its infrastructure is crumbling.

Her optimism is not naivety so much as a chosen posture. The Halo is a place where a single corporate edict can erase a town, where water is rationed by algorithm, and where the people you meet may be as likely to rob you as to trade with you. The Scout walks through all of that with bright eyes and a crossbow ready, treating every unknown corridor or unmarked outcrop as a puzzle to solve rather than a threat to fear. That disposition makes her a natural ally to a Captain who is, by the game's opening, already a fugitive.

Within the broader cast of companions, she occupies the role of the field specialist: the one who checks the perimeter, calls out what the others miss, and occasionally saves the group from a trap that a gun or a wrench never would have noticed. Her presence in the party shifts the tactical and narrative texture of missions, reminding the player that the Halo is as much a landscape to be read as a conflict to be fought.

In Their Own Story

The air in the old mining shaft tasted of rust and recycled breath. The Scout crouched at the lip of the fissure, crossbow nocked, and said nothing for a long time. Behind her, the rest of the crew shifted their weight, waiting.

"Clear," she murmured, almost to herself, as if clearing the room were a personal courtesy she owed the dark. Then, quieter: "But someone's been here. Fresh footprints. Two days, maybe three."

She pulled a thin strip of fiber from the wall, held it up to the pale glow of her wrist-lamp, and smiled the way she always did when the world handed her a small, solvable problem. "Let's go find out who."

Reader's Guide

The Scout is one of the companions you can recruit aboard the Monarch during the game's opening sequence. You first encounter her as a member of the Monarch's crew, performing her scouting duties while the Captain is still a captive of the Monarch's mission. After the Monarch's fate is sealed, she becomes available as a loyal companion for the rest of your journey through the Halo.

Personality-wise, she is the group's bright spot. Where others are sardonic, weary, or openly hostile, she is curious, encouraging, and genuinely excited by the unknown. She talks about outposts and uncharted routes the way a kid talks about a new playground, which makes her all the more striking against the Halo's grim corporate backdrop.

In gameplay, she fills the reconnaissance niche: she helps you spot hidden loot, identify threats before they spring, and generally keep the party from walking into avoidable trouble. Her crossbow gives her a distinctive ranged profile compared to the heavier firearms favored by other companions. When she is in your active party, missions tend to reward careful observation and route planning.

She does not tie into a specific faction's loyalty arc the way some other characters do; her loyalty is to the Captain and the crew. Keeping her in your party and choosing dialogue options that acknowledge her observations will strengthen her bond and unlock additional banter.
