Cloth Boots

Barely more than a rag wrapped around your feet, but better than nothing on a colony ship.

Cloth Boots

Cloth Boots are the most basic footwear item in The Outer Worlds, representing the lowest rung of the boots armor slot. They are a pair of simple, worn fabric shoes that offer negligible protection against the hazards of Halcyon and its colonies. For players who find themselves under-equipped early in the game, they serve as a placeholder until better options become available.

As a Common-tier item, Cloth Boots carry no special effects, no durability concerns, and no quest hooks. They exist primarily to fill the boots slot so that the character's armor set is technically complete, and to give new players a starting point before they can afford or find sturdier alternatives like leather, metal, or exotic boots.

Lore & Background

On the Halcyon, where every resource was rationed and every passenger was catalogued, the Cloth Boots issued to the lower-deck colonists were a symbol of the ship's utilitarian philosophy. Woven from coarse synthetic fiber and stitched with whatever thread was left in the supply locker, they were designed to last a single interstellar crossing and then be discarded. No one expected them to see a second life on a colony world where the ground might be sharp, the air might be toxic, and the local fauna might take a bite out of your ankles.

Yet here they are, still laced up on the feet of a colonist who has woken up on a planet that was never supposed to exist. The boots have frayed at the toes, the soles are thinning, and the faint chemical smell of the Halcyon's air recyclers still clings to the fabric. They offer essentially no protection against a bullet, a blade, or a stray plasma bolt, but they keep the dust out and the feet from blistering on the first few steps off the landing pad. In a world where you might be fighting a warlord in a powered suit within a week, a pair of cloth shoes is a small, humble reminder of how little you had when you started.

Vendors on Halcyon and the early colony outposts stock them as a filler item, often bundled with other Common-tier gear. They are the boots equivalent of a paper plate: functional in the abstract, utterly inadequate in practice, and destined to be replaced the moment a sturdier pair comes into range.

In Their Own Story

The airlock hissed shut behind you, and for the first time in what felt like years, your bare feet—well, cloth-wrapped feet—touched solid ground. The surface was gritty, warm, and faintly oily, and you could feel every pebble through the thin sole. You flexed your toes inside the frayed fabric and thought, absurdly, that they were comfortable. The kind of comfortable that meant you hadn't been walking in anything sturdier for a very long time. Somewhere above, the Halcyon's hull groaned in the unfamiliar gravity, and the colony's distant generators hummed a low, indifferent chord. You pulled your collar up, kicked a small stone out of the way, and started walking. The boots would last. Probably. One step at a time.

Reader's Guide

Cloth Boots Type: Boots (armor slot) | Tier: Common

Stat block: 1 Armor, 1 Weight, no special effects, no elemental resistances. The item provides the absolute minimum protection in the boots slot and serves only to complete a basic armor set.

Availability: Cloth Boots are part of the starting equipment loadout for the player character upon waking on Halcyon. They can also be purchased from early-game vendors on the colony, including the general goods merchants in the initial settlement areas. No quest is required to obtain them, and they are not DLC-exclusive.

Notable flavor: The item's description in-game is brief and matter-of-fact, emphasizing its basic fabric construction and minimal protective value. There is no hidden easter egg or secret interaction tied to the boots themselves, but wearing a full set of Common-tier gear (including Cloth Boots) is a popular way for players to roleplay as a freshly-awakened colonist with no military training, reinforcing the narrative of starting from zero.

Tip: Swap these out as soon as you can afford Leather Boots or a similar upgrade. The 1-point armor difference is small, but the weight savings from dropping to even lighter alternatives (if any) or the armor bump from a higher tier will compound quickly as you face tougher enemies.
