The Union Security
Order is the Union's product, and Security is the invoice.
Union Security is the armed enforcement arm of the Union, the corporate-governing body that controls the colony on Edgewater Bay and the orbital Halcyon Station. Where the Union sets policy, curfews, and the broader vision for the settlement, Union Security is the boots-on-the-ground force that keeps the peace—or at least keeps the peace the way the Union defines it. Their officers patrol the colony streets, man checkpoints, and answer to the Union's chain of command, making them the most visible face of Union authority in the player's daily experience.
For the player, Union Security is less a monolithic villain and more a mirror: depending on the choices made throughout the story, they can be allies to be cooperated with, obstacles to be outmaneuvered, or a force to be outright dismantled. Their presence threads through nearly every major questline, tying the colony's social order to the larger mystery at the heart of the game.

Lore & Background
The Union arrived with the first colonists, promising structure in a lawless corner of the Halcyon system. Union Security was its first instrument: a disciplined cadre of officers tasked with keeping a fragile settlement from tearing itself apart in the first weeks of habitation. Over time, that mandate expanded. What began as a night-watch rotation grew into a full garrison with checkpoints, armored vehicles, and a standing authority over every citizen on Edgewater Bay. The Union's leadership—ultimately answerable to the enigmatic Director—treats Security not as a service to the colonists but as a tool for preserving the Union's singular vision of progress.
This vision is not uniformly benevolent. Union Security enforces curfews, restricts movement, and suppresses dissent with the same flat procedural tone it uses to issue building permits. Officers on the street will cite regulations with the calm of a vending machine dispensing a snack, and the same calm is present when they turn a rifle toward a colonist who has stepped out of line. The Union's philosophy is that freedom without structure is just chaos wearing a different hat, and Security is the hatmaker.
Beneath the procedural surface, however, Security is riven by the same tensions that split the colony. Some officers genuinely believe the Union's order protects people from the void. Others are in it for the uniform, the pay, the sense of purpose in a place where purpose is scarce. And a few, as the player discovers, are quietly complicit in the Union's more troubling long-term plans—plans that treat the colony's population as a resource to be managed rather than a community to be served.
In Their Own Story
The floodlights cut through the red dust at the edge of the settlement, painting the checkpoint in harsh white. A Union Security officer—helmet visor down, rifle slung across the chest—taps a sequence into a terminal without looking up. Behind her, the colony hums its low evening thrum: generators groaning, a vendor coiling up a tarp, the distant clink of a bar that's technically still open. The officer's voice, when it comes, is flat and almost apologetic, the way someone reads a weather report. "Curfew's in effect. You've got until the bell to get inside the perimeter, or I log it." She doesn't raise her weapon. She doesn't need to. The weight of the Union behind her is the whole argument. Somewhere past the floodlights, past the checkpoint, past the last lit window of the colony, the dark stretches out and doesn't care about curfews. But the officer's job is to make sure it doesn't matter. She taps the terminal again. The light turns green. The next walker shuffles through, and the night keeps its shape a little longer.
Reader's Guide
Union Security is the Union's law-enforcement and military branch, and in gameplay terms it is the faction most directly tied to the colony's social order and the main storyline. Their ideology is straightforward: the Union's structure protects the colony, and Security is the mechanism that enforces that structure. They believe in curfews, checkpoints, regulated commerce, and the suppression of any faction or individual that threatens the Union's continuity.
In practice, Security operates across the Edgewater Bay colony and Halcyon Station. Their officers man security checkpoints, patrol the streets, and respond to incidents. The faction is overseen by the Union's leadership, with the Director as the ultimate authority, and field command is held by Security officers at each post. Key interactions include the checkpoint encounters early in the game, mid-game security operations, and the endgame confrontation where the player's relationship with the Union is fully tested.
Player alignment with Union Security is not binary. You can cooperate with them—completing their quests, respecting their authority, and ultimately siding with the Union's vision for the colony. This path typically yields access to Union resources, equipment, and a more orderly endgame. Alternatively, you can oppose them—refusing their orders, siding with rival factions like the Union Church or independent colonists, and ultimately challenging the Union's control. This path opens different questlines, allies, and a more chaotic but arguably freer outcome for the settlement. A middle path is also possible: working with Security on some objectives while undermining them on others, keeping your options open until the final act forces a definitive stance. Whichever way you lean, the colony's fate—and the fate of the people who live under Security's floodlights—shifts accordingly.
Did You Know?
- Union Security's authority extends to both the ground-level colony on Edgewater Bay and the orbital Halcyon Station, making them the only faction with a genuine two-tier operational footprint.
- The Union's ultimate leadership—the Director—is tied to the player's own ship and its AI, meaning Security's chain of command is, in a sense, connected to the player's own vessel.
- Security officers in the game often deliver their most threatening lines with the same flat, procedural tone they use for routine paperwork, a deliberate design choice that underscores the Union's bureaucratic dehumaniza
- The player's endgame choices regarding the Union and its Security force determine whether the colony retains its structured governance or fractures into a more independent, less regulated society.
