Medkit

Twenty-five hit points between you and a very bad day.

Medkit

The Medkit is the most fundamental healing consumable in The Outer Worlds, a small sealed kit of antiseptic gauze, stimulant patches, and emergency bandages designed to patch a wounded colonist back into fighting shape. Available from the very first moments aboard the Halcyon and sold by nearly every vendor across the system, it is the item every player reaches for when the health bar dips into the red.

While far from the most powerful restorative in the game's inventory, the Medkit's ubiquity makes it the backbone of survival in a universe where a single stray bullet or a clumsy fall off a cargo pallet can end a run. It is the item you hoard, the item you forget to use, and the item whose absence you feel most acutely in the heat of a firefight on Edgewater or a back-alley brawl in Edgewater's docks.

Lore & Background

In the corporate sprawl of the Halcyon and the lawless colonies it serves, medical care is a commodity no less traded than ammunition or rations. The Medkit was standardized by the Halcyon's medical department as a field-issue emergency pack: enough to stop a bleed, close a wound, and jolt a fading heart back into rhythm, but not enough to perform surgery or treat radiation poisoning. Its design philosophy is bluntly utilitarian—seal it, carry it, open it when you're bleeding, throw it away.

Colonists on Edgewater, Tycho, and the other settlements treat the Medkit with a mix of reverence and frustration. It is the difference between surviving a barroom brawl and ending up in a body bag, yet it is also the cheapest, most replaceable item in any trader's stock. Vendors sell them by the handful, and they litter supply lockers, desk drawers, and the pockets of the recently deceased. In a world where a single well-placed round can drop you, the Medkit is the quiet, unglamorous hero of every survival story.

More advanced restoratives—Advanced Medkits, stimulant injections, and the odd black-market bio-foam—exist for those who can afford them, but the plain Medkit remains the default. It is the item the Halcyon's crew grabs before stepping off the ship for the first time, the item a new colonist is handed alongside a sidearm and a set of instructions they will never fully read.

In Their Own Story

The fluorescent tube above the triage table flickers and dies. You're alone in the back room of a dockside clinic on Edgewater, the smell of rust and antiseptic thick in the air. Your left arm hangs useless at your side, the sleeve darkening with each passing second. You fumble through your pack, fingers brushing past a spent magazine, a crumpled ration wrapper, and finally the small, sealed rectangle you've been saving. You tear the plastic. The gauze is cold. The stimulant patch stings like a wasp bite pressed to your temple. You count to ten. The world stops spinning. You roll the empty kit into a ball, drop it in the bin, and reach for your pistol. There's still a job to finish.

Reader's Guide

Medkit Type: Consumable – Health Restoration Tier: Common (Tier 1)

Stat Block: Restores 25 HP. Single-use. No special modifiers. Very low weight, making it easy to carry in bulk.

Availability: The Medkit is available essentially everywhere. Vendors on the Halcyon (including the shop near the crew quarters), traders on Edgewater, Tycho, and all other settlements stock them. They also appear in supply lockers, medical rooms, desk drawers, and on the bodies of fallen enemies. No quest is required to obtain one, and it is not DLC-exclusive.

Notable notes: The Medkit is the baseline healing item. The Advanced Medkit, found later or in higher-tier loot, restores a greater amount of HP. Because the Medkit is so common, players often find themselves carrying several and forgetting to use them until the health bar is critically low. Its simplicity is its strength: no cooldown, no crafting, no conditions—just open and heal.

Flavor: The item description in-game is brief and utilitarian, emphasizing its field-issue, one-and-done nature. There is no hidden easter egg or secret interaction tied to the Medkit itself, though the game's broader humor around corporate medical bureaucracy (and the Halcyon's attitude toward crewmember injuries) adds a layer of dark comedy to every use.
