Persuasion
Talk your way past every locked door, every hostile faction, and every stubborn shopkeeper on Halcyon.
Persuasion is one of the core character skills in The Outer Worlds, the 2019 role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Rather than governing combat or crafting, Persuasion shapes how the player character navigates the social landscape of the colony ship Halcyon and its surrounding settlements. Every dialogue tree, every haggling session at a shop, and every tense negotiation with a faction leader runs through this skill, making it the backbone of the game's reputation as a dialogue-driven RPG.

Lore & Background
On Halcyon, words are as sharp as any plasma rifle. The colony was seeded by the MonoCorp's Halcyon Runtime, and its citizens learned early that the people who could talk a security officer into looking the other way, or convince a trader to part with medicine at a fair price, were the ones who survived the frontier's rougher edges. Persuasion is less a mechanical stat and more a reflection of that survival skill: the ability to read a room, find the angle that makes someone say yes, and walk away with what you need without firing a shot.
The skill permeates nearly every social encounter on the ship and in the settlements of the Uncharted system. A high Persuasion character can unlock dialogue branches that a lower level simply cannot access, turning a hostile confrontation into a cooperative one, or extracting information that would otherwise require a fight or a theft. It also softens the economic grind, letting the player negotiate better prices at vendors and occasionally talk their way out of penalties.
For players who build a social or diplomatic character, Persuasion becomes the defining skill. It pairs naturally with Intelligence for a well-spoken schemer, or with Strength for a character who can talk first and threaten second. Either way, it reminds the player that Halcyon is a place where a good sentence can be worth more than a good weapon.
In Their Own Story
The bar at the Halcyon Runtime's lower deck smelled of recycled coffee and ozone. The player leaned on the counter, watching the bartender wipe the same glass for the third time. He'd already refused to sell them the last vial of stim. The player smiled, leaned in, and said something about the MonoCorp's little 'safety audit' that was due in two days and how a missing inventory item might look very bad on his file. The bartender stopped wiping. The glass went down. The stim went into the player's hand. Outside, the amber lights of the ship hummed on, indifferent, as the player walked away with a small victory that no bullet could have bought.
Reader's Guide
Persuasion is a primary skill you allocate points into at character creation and continue investing in as you level up. Each point you spend unlocks or strengthens nodes in its talent tree, which progresses through several tiers.
Early talents focus on broadening your social toolkit: unlocking additional dialogue options in conversations, improving your success rate on persuasion checks, and granting small discounts when purchasing goods from vendors. These are the bread-and-butter nodes that make a social build feel responsive from the start.
Mid-tier talents deepen the mechanical payoff. You gain the ability to talk your way through situations that would otherwise require combat or stealth, access more aggressive negotiation lines that can pressure NPCs into compliance, and improve the economic returns of haggling. Several of these talents are essential for specific quest solutions where a purely combat-oriented character would be forced into a fight or a theft to progress.
Higher-tier talents push Persuasion into genuinely powerful territory: unlocking rare dialogue branches that can resolve faction conflicts peacefully, granting the ability to convince characters to abandon their positions mid-conversation, and providing significant economic advantages that compound throughout the game. Pairing Persuasion with Intelligence creates a well-rounded diplomat-scholar, while stacking it with Strength yields a character who can talk, then back it up with a raised fist.
If you are playing a non-combat or low-combat build, Persuasion is arguably the single most important skill to invest in, as it keeps you from being locked out of quest-critical dialogue options.
Did You Know?
- Persuasion is one of the very few skills in The Outer Worlds that primarily affects dialogue and social encounters rather than combat stats or crafting, making it the defining skill for a pure 'talker' build.
- Several quest-critical dialogue options are gated behind Persuasion thresholds, meaning a character who neglects this skill may be forced into combat or theft solutions for story beats that a high-Persuasion character ca
- The skill interacts with vendor pricing across the game, so a high-Persuasion character can save a meaningful amount of credits over the course of a full playthrough without ever picking up a weapon.
- Persuasion pairs synergistically with Intelligence for a 'well-spoken strategist' build, as some of the most rewarding dialogue options require both social confidence and the knowledge to reference the right facts.
