Power Armor Helmet
A helmet so thick it could shrug off a freighter door, and it comes with a very smug flavor text.
The Power Armor Helmet is the headpiece of the four-piece Power Armor set in The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment's retro-futuristic space RPG. As the crown jewel of the Heavy armor tier, it represents the pinnacle of brute-force protection available to the player character on Halcyon, trading agility for an almost absurd wall of physical resistance around the skull.
In a game where a stray bullet, a plasma bolt, or a very angry robot can crack your head open in a single hit, donning the Power Armor Helmet is the equivalent of saying, 'I would rather be slow and alive than fast and paste.' It anchors the full set bonus and signals to every enemy on the station that you are not someone they want to punch first.

Lore & Background
The Power Armor line traces its design philosophy back to the early Halcyon colony, when the Monarch's engineers needed field workers who could survive industrial accidents, radiation leaks, and the occasional rogue maintenance drone. The result was a class of armor built around a single principle: if the hit is physical, the armor eats it. The helmet in particular is a slab of layered composite and ceramic plating wrapped around the head, with a narrow visor slit and a reinforced chin guard that looks like it was designed to be headbutted into a wall without consequence.
By the time the player arrives on Halcyon, the Power Armor set has become a mid-to-late-game benchmark. Lower-tier crews run in light or medium gear, prioritizing speed and dodge. The Power Armor wearer, by contrast, adopts a 'stand still and let them hit me' doctrine. The helmet's physical resistance scales well enough that a burst of small-arms fire becomes an annoyance rather than a death sentence, though energy and explosive weapons still find their way through the gaps.
The set's four-piece bonus rewards players who commit fully to the heavy path, and the helmet is the first piece most players slot in simply because headshots are the most common way to die in a firefight. It is, in the game's own winking tone, the armor piece for people who have decided that being hit is a feature, not a bug.
In Their Own Story
The corridor on the Monarch's station smelled like burnt wiring and recycled coffee. You pulled the Power Armor Helmet from the supply crate, the clasp cold against your thumb, and settled it over your head with a satisfying metallic thud. The world narrowed to a thin strip of dimly lit hallway through the visor slit. Somewhere ahead, a maintenance drone was still spinning its blade in a lazy circle, and a pair of Monarch security bots had just spotted the body of their colleague.
You did not run. You did not hide. You walked forward, boots ringing off the deck plating, and let the first bolt punch into the plating with a dull, almost polite *thunk*. The second one chipped a paint chip off the cheek guard. You tilted your head, looked at the drone through the slit, and said, 'You want to try again?', before raising your shotgun and ending the debate. The helmet hummed faintly, as if satisfied. You respected that.
Reader's Guide
Power Armor Helmet Type: Armor (Helmet) | Tier: Heavy
Stat block: Provides Physical Damage Resistance. No elemental or energy resistance. Weight class is Heavy, which increases the character's total armor weight and can slow movement if the player's Strength or relevant attribute is low. As part of the four-piece Power Armor set, equipping all four pieces activates a set bonus that further boosts physical resistance.
Availability: Found in the base game. Power Armor pieces appear in high-level loot tables and in specific containers throughout the later regions of Halcyon. They are not gated behind a single quest, but the areas where they reliably drop tend to be in the mid-to-late game arc. They can also be crafted or purchased from certain vendors who stock Heavy-tier gear once the player has progressed far enough. Not DLC-exclusive.
Flavor text and easter eggs: The item description carries the game's signature deadpan humor, referencing the helmet's over-the-top protection in a way that pokes fun at the player's tendency to over-armor. The Power Armor set as a whole is a deliberate nod to the classic 'heavy plate' trope from earlier RPGs, and the helmet's bulky silhouette is one of the most visually distinct pieces in the game's armor roster. Players who complete the full set will notice the helmet's layered plating and narrow visor give the character a distinctly 'industrial tank' look that stands out against the lighter, more streamlined armor options.
Tip: Pair with a high-Strength build and a shotgun or heavy pistol for the classic 'walk into the fight and ignore small arms' playstyle.
Did You Know?
- The Power Armor Helmet is the heaviest single armor piece in the base game, and equipping the full four-piece set pushes the character into the maximum Heavy armor weight bracket.
- Despite its bulk, the helmet still leaves the character's face partially visible through the visor slit, a design choice that keeps the player's avatar expressive even in full plate.
- The Power Armor set is one of the few armor lines in the game that provides no elemental or energy resistance at all, making it a pure physical-damage specialization that punishes players who face heavy plasma or fire en
- The helmet's layered composite plating is a visual callback to the retro-industrial aesthetic that defines the Outer Worlds' art direction, sitting somewhere between a 1970s factory hard hat and a sci-fi battle helm.
