Heavy Weapons
Bigger gun, bigger boom, bigger problem for the Marshal's goons.
Heavy Weapons is one of the nine core skills in Obsidian Entertainment's 2019 role-playing game The Outer Worlds. It governs the player's proficiency with the game's largest and most destructive firearms—shotguns, rocket launchers, miniguns, and similar heavy-caliber weapons. Raising this skill increases damage output with those weapon classes and, at key rank thresholds, unlocks Talents that add mechanical bonuses or new effects to heavy-weapon combat.
As a combat-oriented skill, Heavy Weapons sits alongside Ranged, Melee, and Combat in the game's action-focused skill cluster. Players who favor explosive or close-range area-of-effect damage will find it central to their build, while it also synergizes with perks that reward weapon variety or heavy-weapon specialization.

Lore & Background
On Halcyon, the Union's corporate bureaucracy dictates nearly every facet of colonial life, but the armory racks in the Halcyon's cargo bay tell a different story. Heavy weapons—rocket launchers with their distinctive shaped charges, pump-action shotguns loaded with slugs, and the grinding thunder of a minigun—were stocked for the colony's security forces and for the occasional asteroid-mining crew that needed to crack open stubborn rock. In practice, they became the preferred tools of anyone who found the Union's 'light and tidy' sidearm policy insufficient for dealing with feral wildlife, hostile raiders, or the increasingly hostile AI that took over the station.
The skill itself reflects a design philosophy Obsidian has used across its RPGs: specialization with a mechanical payoff. A player who dumps points into Heavy Weapons will notice their rocket rounds punch through shields that a standard rifle merely chips, and their shotgun blasts scatter enemies in tight corridors of the Halcyon's lower decks. The Talents layered on top reward commitment, turning a 'big gun' playstyle from simply louder into genuinely more effective.
In the broader lore of the Outer Worlds, heavy weapons carry a cultural weight. The Union's marketing materials tout them as 'professional-grade tools for professional colonists,' while the more independent settlers in the outer rings treat a rocket launcher the way a frontier farmer might treat a plow—essential, unglamorous, and the first thing you reach for when things go sideways.
In Their Own Story
The corridor on Deck 7 reeked of ozone and burnt polymer. You could hear the Marshal's security drones two levels up, their whirring servos a metronome counting down to the next ambush. You didn't have time for finesse. You didn't have time for a whispered 'please stand down.'
You racked the shotgun. The slide felt heavy in your hands, the kind of weight that meant the next three seconds belonged to you and not to the Union's little metal dogs. The first blast turned the bulkhead door into confetti and sent a drone cartwheeling into the ceiling. The second caught the second drone mid-turn, its optical sensor cracking like a cheap glass bead.
Silence. Then the soft tick of cooling metal. You checked the chamber, reloaded, and kept walking. Somewhere above, the Marshal was still trying to figure out why its security budget was evaporating one shotgun round at a time. You figured you'd give it a few more minutes before you introduced it to the rocket launcher.
Reader's Guide
Heavy Weapons is a single-skill tree with three Talent tiers. Here's how each tier shapes your build:
**Rank 3 Talent – Damage Bonus:** Unlocks a flat percentage increase to all heavy-weapon damage. This is the foundational Talent and makes the skill feel worthwhile early. Pair it with the Combat skill for a general damage multiplier that stacks on top, or with a shotgun for reliable close-range burst in the Halcyon's tight corridors. Essential if you want heavy weapons to keep pace with lighter options at mid-game.
**Rank 6 Talent – Secondary Effect:** Grants an additional mechanical effect when firing heavy weapons (such as bonus damage against shields or a secondary status effect). This is where the skill starts to feel distinct from simply 'more damage.' Synergizes well with Ranged for a hybrid build that switches between precise rifle fire and heavy-weapon suppression. Particularly useful in the later Halcyon and Colony quests where shielded enemies become common.
**Rank 9 Talent – Capstone:** The highest tier adds a significant combat advantage, often involving critical-hit modifiers or area-of-effect enhancements for heavy weapons. This is the build-defining Talent: commit to it and heavy weapons become your primary damage source. Pairs naturally with the Combat and Ranged trees for maximum output. For players who want a 'one-shot, one kill' rocket-launcher playstyle, this tier is the payoff.
**Build notes:** Heavy Weapons does not grant new dialogue options or stealth perks—those live under Persuasion and Streetwise. It is purely a combat-damage and effect skill. If your playstyle revolves around shotguns in close quarters or rocket launchers for crowd control, prioritize this skill before Ranged. If you prefer precision rifle work, Ranged will serve you better and Heavy Weapons can stay at rank 1–2 for situational use.
Did You Know?
- Heavy Weapons in The Outer Worlds governs a distinct weapon class separate from Ranged (light firearms) and Melee, meaning a shotgun and a pistol scale off entirely different skill points.
- The game's heavy-weapon roster includes rocket launchers, miniguns, and shotguns, but the exact list of weapons that count as 'heavy' for skill-scaling purposes is defined by the game's internal weapon tags rather than a
- Obsidian's skill system lets you allocate points freely at any time through the character sheet, so a player can pivot from a Ranged-heavy build to a Heavy Weapons build mid-game without permanent lock-in.
- The Heavy Weapons skill does not affect the Halcyon's shipboard cannons or the game's vehicle weapons; those are governed by separate mechanics outside the nine-skill framework.
